Johandi du Plessis is an artist and researcher based in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She received her BA degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Free State in 2014 and is currently in the final stages towards completing her MA in Fine Arts at the same institution, where she also teaches as a junior lecturer.

Drawing from her interest in the social life of images - how images move among diverse and surprising contexts, objects and places – Du Plessis explores the ways in which social imaginaries change, intersect and transform in new political, social and other contexts, and how this is often revealed, shaped, contained and catalyzed through images and pictures. In her art practice, Du Plessis dabbles across mediums - such as drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and digital-based mediums such as GIFs. She frequently incorporates materials, technology and tools in unforeseen ways, which often results in chance encounters and serendipitous imagery.

Du Plessis has taken part in several local and national exhibitions, including the New Breed Art Competition in 2016 and 2018, the Sasol New Signatures Top 100 in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021 and the Absa l’Atelier in 2014 and 2015.
